Swindon Borough Council held a special event at Lydiard Park on Thursday 8th October to celebrate Kinship Care Week and thank those who have stepped in to care for vulnerable youngsters.
Kinship carers are relatives, family friends or other trusted adults who take responsibility for children when their parents are unable to look after them.
The arrangements allow children to remain connected to familiar people, places and communities while receiving the care and stability they need.
The celebration brought together carers and their families, recognising the important role they play in supporting children and young people across Swindon.
Councillor Kate Tomlinson, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Education, attended the event to thank those involved.
She said:
“Kinship carers play an invaluable role in the lives of children and young people, providing love, stability and a sense of belonging during difficult times.
“It was a pleasure to spend time with some of our kinship families and thank them personally for everything they do.
“Their dedication helps children stay connected to the people and places that matter most to them and we are incredibly grateful for their support.”
There are currently 44 kinship carers in Swindon who provide homes for local children and young people.
Kinship Care Week takes place annually to raise awareness of the contribution made by people who take on caring responsibilities when children’s parents cannot.
The event at Lydiard Park also highlighted the importance of supporting those who take on these responsibilities, often during difficult family circumstances.
