Home upgrades – Simple ways to give your dated kitchen a modern makeover

Kitchen trends, like all other trends, shift constantly, driven by people’s changing needs and lifestyles and the ongoing tech advances. One year it’s all about the shabby chic aesthetic and relaxed rustic vibes, and the next one the focus moves to industrial-style kitchens with brick walls and stainless-steel appliances. It’s difficult to keep up with the latest design trends and styles and even more challenging to keep your kitchen looking fresh and current despite the passage of time.

So, what happens when the proverbial heart of the home doesn’t beat as it once did because it has become worn-out and outdated? Should you start from scratch and renovate the entire room? Unfortunately, unlike changing your wardrobe to match the latest fashion trends, taking on a kitchen renovation project is much more expensive and time-consuming, and no one wants to invest in a new kitchen every few years.

The good news is you don’t have to break the bank or change everything in your kitchen to mask the signs of time. There are easier and more affordable ways to refresh your tired-looking kitchen and create a stylish and modern space, so here’s what you can do instead.

Keep it simple

Modern kitchen design revolves around the concept of sophisticated simplicity, being characterised by clean lines, minimal décor and understated colour schemes, with a special focus on functionality, comfort and freedom of movement. So, if you want to create a modern-looking kitchen, you should embrace the less is more approach.

A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for your tarnished walls and cabinetry, but you need to choose the colours carefully. For a modern kitchen vibe, it’s best to opt for a monochromatic palette. White is the safest choice and will help you brighten up the space instantly, but if you feel the need for something a bit more colourful, beige, brown and grey are equally good options.

If your cabinets are past the salvage point and no amount of paint or fixing can bring them back to life, handleless kitchens are a popular choice for modern-looking spaces as they are sleek and practical and have a modern minimalist feel to them.

Clutter is another aspect you need to address. In modern kitchens, there are very few elements on display and no clutter in sight, so you have to cut back on décor items and make sure your countertops are not crowded with tools and equipment. That’s why you should focus on enhancing your storage space by making use of cabinet organisers and other clever storage solutions that can make your life easier and keep your kitchen clutter-free.

Incorporate modern appliances

You can’t have a modern-looking kitchen and still use outdated appliances that look like they could break down at any moment. When you think about contemporary kitchens, stainless steel appliances are probably the first thing that comes to mind due to their timeless appearance and smooth lines that can enhance the aspect of any kitchen.

Admittedly, purchasing new kitchen equipment doesn’t come cheap, but you don’t have to replace all your appliances in one go. Start with the ones that you use the most and that are in dire need of upgrading and then move on to the rest. Besides, modern high-quality appliances are not just easy on the eyes, but they’re also more durable and performant, easier to use and maintain, and can help you save on energy bills, so this is an investment you’re not going to regret.

Invest in new countertops

Countertops are probably the first element to catch one’s eye when entering a kitchen since they occupy a large portion of the room and can therefore set the tone for the whole space. If you’ve never changed your kitchen countertops and they show visible signs of wear and tear after so many years of intense usage, now might be a good time to finally replace them.

When it comes to choosing new countertops to complement a modern kitchen, there are more than a few options to consider. Quartz seems to be the material of choice for contemporary designs, given its durability, resistance to stains and low maintenance. Other options include marble, granite, soapstone, limestone or wood, so it all comes down to your personal preferences and budget.

Play with texture

Considering that modern kitchens feature very few decorations and ornaments, people can sometimes fall to the opposite extreme and end up with a space that looks rather dull and sterile. Fortunately, you can always fix the problem and add interest to your kitchen by incorporating different materials and textures.

You can combine natural wood floors with stone countertops, shiny metallic fixtures and stainless-steel appliances to create a space that looks modern but feels warm and inviting at the same time. It’s also important to maintain a balance when choosing textures and finishes. For example, if you have glossy cabinets, it’s best to go for a matte finish for countertops and walls, or the other way around.

Upgrade the lighting

Lighting plays a key role in interior design as it can change the entire ambience of the space, so if you want to transform your kitchen’s appearance and give it a modern spin, the right lighting fixture can help you achieve this look.

You need to make sure every area of your kitchen is properly illuminated, not only for aesthetic reasons but also to improve the functionality of the room. This means layering lighting throughout your kitchen by installing overhead lights above workspaces and adding accent lighting to cover the rest of the space and create a cosier vibe.

Final thoughts

The thought of taking on a kitchen upgrade project can feel daunting for most homeowners due to the high costs they usually entail. However, as we’ve hopefully managed to prove with the above tips, it’s possible to give your old kitchen a modern makeover without breaking the bank if you know what changes you need to make and where to focus your attention and resources.
