1st December 2016 Public Power Solutions Limited (PPS), the wholly-owned company of Swindon Borough Council, has been named Most Proactive Public Sector Body in the 2016 Regen SW Green Energy Awards.

Bernie Brannan, Managing Director, Public Power Solutions, said: “We are very pleased to have won this prestigious award in recognition of our innovative approach to developing renewable projects for the public sector.

This includes unique finance solutions such as Swindon Council solar bonds; developing one of the largest solar farms in the UK at Wroughton airfield; and the first Solid Recovered Fuel plant in the UK to process municipal waste into a high-calorie renewable fuel powered by a 2.5MW solar array – the ultimate in green energy.

“We’re a small hardworking team, proud to be setting a benchmark for other local authorities, and we’re now moving forward with other exciting new projects such as solar car parks, landfill sites and commercial rooftops.”

PPS is helping Swindon Borough Council install 200 MW renewable capacity by 2020, to meet the equivalent energy needs of every home in the Borough. It’s latest innovation is Swindon Council-backed Solar Bonds which can be held in the UK’s first green energy ISA launched by Abundance Investment and will finance the construction of a solar farm on a former landfill site at Chapel Farm, Blunsdon, bringing Swindon to 80% of its renewables target.

Merlin Hyman, Chief Executive of Regen SW, said: “Renewables now generate 25 per cent of our power and are revolutionising the way we generate, supply and use electricity. The Green Energy Awards celebrate the role of the south west companies and projects at the heart of this success story.”

More than 100 companies entered the thirteenth annual South West Green Energy Awards, which were presented at a ceremony in Bath Assembly Rooms held on Tuesday evening.
