Wroughton Carnival still going ahead despite confusion over cancellation

Residents are being reassured that Wroughton Carnival will still go ahead this Saturday after confusion over reports suggesting the event had been cancelled.

The misunderstanding arose after the cancellation of the Wroughton Carnival Fun Dog Show, which led some people to believe the entire carnival had been called off after a misleading headline from a local newspaper. However, organisers have confirmed that only the dog show has been cancelled, with the rest of the programme continuing as planned.

The decision to cancel the dog show was made by charity Food Fairies for Street Dogs & Cats because of concerns about animal welfare during the warm weather.

In a statement, the charity said it would not risk the health of dogs by holding the competition in the forecast temperatures. It added that it had seen repeated incidents this year of animals suffering or dying during periods of hot weather.

Although the competition will no longer take place, the charity will still be attending the carnival with its fundraising stall and is encouraging people to come along and support its work.

Wroughton Carnival will take place on Saturday 4th July at Wier Field from 12pm until 6pm.

The traditional parade is due to begin at 1pm, with live music, entertainment, community stalls, food vendors and a funfair all forming part of the day’s programme.

The Met Office is currently forecasting temperatures of around 24C in Swindon on Saturday.

While the warm conditions prompted organisers of the dog show to put animal welfare first, there has been no announcement that the carnival itself has been cancelled.

People attending the event are being encouraged to take sensible precautions in the warm weather by staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen and taking extra care with children, older people and pets.

For anyone unsure whether Wroughton Carnival is still happening, organisers have confirmed the event is going ahead as planned. The only change to this year’s programme is the cancellation of the Fun Dog Show.
