The twenty one year old has agreed a two and a half year contract which will keep him at the County Ground until the end of the 2027-28 season.
Middlemas progressed through Sunderland’s academy and was regarded as one of the club’s most reliable young midfielders. He signed professional terms in 2023 and was regularly exposed to first-team environments despite not making a senior competitive appearance.
He is described as a box-to-box midfielder with a strong work rate and good composure in possession. Sunderland staff also trusted him with leadership responsibilities at a young age.
The midfielder gained experience of men’s football during a short loan spell with South Shields in the 2024-25 season. He made five appearances as he adjusted to the physical demands of the non-league game.
Alongside that spell, Middlemas was a key figure for Sunderland’s Under-21s under Graeme Murty. He made 28 appearances across the season, often captaining the side.

His attacking contribution included two goals and seven assists in 21 appearances. He was regularly praised for setting standards on and off the pitch.
Middlemas was first named on Sunderland’s first-team bench at the age of sixteen for an EFL Trophy match against Manchester United. He was later included in the squad for the Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie away at Shrewsbury Town in January 2023.
Speaking after completing the move, Middlemas said: “I’m really excited to be here. Swindon is a big club with great fans, and I can’t wait to get started, work hard, and help the team push on.
“The manager showed a lot of belief in me, and that made the decision an easy one.”
Swindon Town say the midfielder adds competition and depth to their midfield options as he looks to establish himself in senior football.
