The Salvation Army has launched its new Eden Patch project at its church and community centre in Chapel Street, Gorse Hill.

Volunteers have spent recent months clearing overgrown and neglected areas of the grounds to create a wildlife-friendly garden and community growing space.

Work started in June after church members began exploring ways to bring the disused land back into use.

Organisers are focusing on recycling and repurposing materials rather than buying everything needed for the project.

People have already donated wood offcuts, pallets, jars, tools and tyres, which will be turned into planters. Natural materials have also been provided for children’s activities.

Sulemani 2 Quality Foods and The Salvation Army Donation Centre and charity shop are among the local businesses and organisations supporting the scheme.

Future plans include growing herbs and pollinator-friendly plants, alongside seasonal growing areas which can be shared by local people.

Dedicated spaces for children’s ministry and outdoor learning are also planned, as well as recycled garden features and regular Eco Church events.

The scheme builds on the Gorse Hill church’s Bronze Eco Church award and will support its efforts to achieve the Silver award by increasing environmental activities available to the community.

Children’s worker Claire March, who is leading the project, said:

“Seeing our community come together around this shared vision has been something truly special.

“Working together to inspire and motivate our young people – equipping them to find fulfilment in caring for God’s creation – is a privilege we don’t take lightly here at The Salvation Army.”

The Eden Patch name takes inspiration from the biblical Garden of Eden and the church’s ambition to create a space where people and nature can flourish together.

It was also inspired by Cornwall’s Eden Project, an environmental and educational attraction and charity.

Claire added:

“The Eden Patch is more than just a garden; it is a multi-use space designed to help the church live out its values.

“Over the past few months, volunteers have been reclaiming overgrown or neglected areas, introducing wildlife-friendly planting, and building structures using donated and repurposed materials.”

Captain Theresa Torr, who leads The Salvation Army’s church and charity work in Gorse Hill, said sustainability is central to the scheme.

She said:

“We emphasise reusing items rather than buying new. This keeps the project sustainable and accessible, showing that we can reduce waste whilst building something beautiful for everyone to enjoy.”

The Eden Patch forms part of The Salvation Army’s wider Care For Creation mission priority.

Organisers are encouraging people to get involved by volunteering, donating useful materials or visiting the garden as work progresses.
