The event transformed Wood Street into a colourful celebration of Mexican heritage, remembrance and culture, with visitors of all ages coming together to honour lost loved ones.

Many arrived wearing skull face paint and traditional costumes, contributing to the striking atmosphere. A public ofrenda – or altar – stood at the centre of the event, displaying over 200 photographs of those who had passed away.

Performances included Mexican band Mariachi Wey, Afro-Peruvian group Zambo Lando, and JHS Dance Academy. There were also live cacao grinding demonstrations and various family-friendly activities.

Oscar Saucedo, a Mexican national, co-hosted the event alongside Evie Jackson, guiding crowds through the day’s line-up.

Rebeca Grepe one of the traders said:

“It was incredible. I’ve only just started my business and didn’t expect the response we had, I sold out of tamales in under two hours.

But more than that, it meant so much to share a piece of real Mexican tradition with people who were genuinely interested and respectful.

The whole atmosphere felt joyful and authentic, just like Día de los Muertos should be.”

Food and drink were served from ten international stalls offering Mexican and other global cuisines. Children were kept entertained at a ‘design your own maraca’ station, which proved particularly popular with families.

Kris Talikowski, Chair of the Old Town Business Association, said:

“It was one of the most beautiful events we’ve ever held in Old Town.

“People came not just to enjoy the music and food, but to remember, to connect, and to share in something truly meaningful.

“We wanted this to be culturally authentic, and with the help of Oscar and others from the Mexican community, it really was.

“I think we’ve started something very special – and it’s clear from the feedback that people want to see it return next year.”

With positive feedback from residents and visitors, organisers are now considering making the Day of the Dead Festival an annual event, with plans underway for a return in 2026.
