The milestone highlights the town’s long-standing contribution to the brand’s global success, with the Swindon plant manufacturing millions of precision-engineered body panels since 2001.

Those panels have supported the production of more than 4.6 million vehicles at BMW’s Oxford site, forming the structure of every UK-built MINI exported to more than 100 countries worldwide.

While the Oxford plant completes final assembly, Swindon’s operation provides the essential body components that underpin each vehicle.
The factory presses, welds and assembles panels that are transported daily to Oxford, ensuring production runs smoothly across the UK manufacturing network.

Although often less visible than the finished cars rolling off the line, the Swindon site remains a critical part of the process and a major employer in the town.

More than 3,000 jobs are supported across the Oxford and Swindon plants, with employees bringing decades of experience alongside a new generation of skilled apprentices.

In 2026, 115 employees will mark 25 years of service, underlining the depth of expertise and commitment within the workforce.

Markus Grüneisl, CEO of BMW UK Manufacturing, described the anniversary as “a proud moment” for everyone involved.

“From the very beginning, our plants in Oxford and Swindon have been at the heart of MINI’s global success, combining exceptional craftsmanship with innovation,” he said.

“Above all, it is our people, their creativity, expertise and pride in what they do, that continue to make MINI so special.”

The anniversary comes at a time of significant change for the automotive industry, as manufacturers adapt to advancing technology and evolving global markets.

BMW says its UK production network, including the Swindon plant, will continue to play a central role in that transition.

The company points to its long-standing reputation for quality, engineering and distinctive design as foundations for future growth.

Alongside its experienced workforce, BMW continues to invest in developing future talent, with more than 100 apprentices currently training across its UK sites.

Since 2001, nearly 4.7 million MINIs have been built in Britain, with Swindon’s contribution forming a vital part of that achievement.

For the town, the 25-year milestone reflects not only past success but also its ongoing place within a global manufacturing story that continues to evolve.
