Deputy Leader of Swindon Borough Council, Councillor Jake Chandler, recently visited Partners Theatre Company during rehearsals as preparations continue for the town’s full City of Culture submission next month.
The theatre group, which is run by Reach Inclusive Arts Charity, brings together adults with a range of disabilities and health needs to create original performances while building confidence and friendships.
Members are currently preparing for Night at the Gallery, a new production that will form part of this year’s Signal Festival.
The show tells the story of famous paintings that come to life to stop an art theft, combining comedy with original performances.
Signal Festival runs from Thursday 24th July to Friday 1st August and is one of the flagship events supporting Swindon’s City of Culture ambitions, showcasing artists, performers and community groups from across the borough.
The visit formed part of the council’s ongoing engagement with organisations involved in the bid, which is being led jointly by Swindon Culture Collective and Swindon Borough Council.

“It was a real privilege to visit the theatre group and see first-hand the dedication, talent and enthusiasm of everyone involved.
“Projects like this are at the heart of what makes Swindon such a strong and vibrant community. Their success demonstrates the difference that community-led organisations can make when people are given the opportunity to fulfil their potential.”

“As we prepare to submit our UK City of Culture 2029 bid next month, it is important that we continue to showcase the breadth of cultural activity already taking place across the Borough. From major festivals and creative organisations to grassroots groups like Reach and projects like the Partners Theatre Company, Swindon has a compelling story to tell about its ambition, creativity and community spirit.”
The UK City of Culture competition offers the successful location up to £10 million to deliver a year-long programme of arts, heritage and community events in 2029.
Swindon secured a place on the national longlist earlier this year and is now preparing its detailed submission for the next stage of the competition.
Alongside established events including Signal Festival, Swindon MELA, Swindon Paint Fest, Festival of Tomorrow, Shuffle and the Swindon Festival of Literature, community organisations such as Partners Theatre Company are being showcased as part of the town’s cultural offer.
The bid aims to demonstrate not only the strength of Swindon’s creative sector but also the role community-led organisations play in bringing people together and encouraging participation in the arts.
