Residents urge Stratton Parish for Swindon’s dog agility equipment at Merton

Residents have begun sharing their views on potential upgrades to Merton Fields as Stratton St Margaret Parish Council launches a public consultation on the future of the well-used green space.

Early feedback indicates strong interest in installing free to use and unenclosed dog agility equipment. Many dog owners say the addition would support responsible exercise and give pets more structured stimulation without altering the character of the field.

It would extend the parish’s existing dog-friendly facilities. Stratton already operates an enclosed dog-agility area on St Stephen’s Road near Greenbridge, which is well used by local owners, and residents say a second site at Merton Fields would offer the same benefits to families on this side of the parish.

Local resident Alexander Barrass-Haswell said the idea reflects how the space already functions for many people.

“Merton Fields is already a daily destination for dog walkers. Adding basic dog-agility equipment would be a low-impact improvement that people would actually use.

It is practical, it encourages good habits and it fits the space as it is,” he said.

Others say the benefits go beyond physical activity.

Karen Peedle said:

“I think it’s a very good idea, because dogs need a lot more stimulation than just walking around the field, and it gives them the extra exercise to do. And there’s not a lot like it in Swindon at all.”

For some, the appeal lies in offering pets a broader challenge.

Debbie Power said:

“I don’t know if my greyhound would do it, but she’s intelligent and she goes at a speed. I think it’s a good idea. It exercises their brains as well as their legs.”

Alongside the calls for agility features, residents have also raised concerns about the basketball court. Several say the surface and line markings need resurfacing due to increasing use by young people.

The parish council’s consultation asks the community to prioritise improvements so future investment can be directed where it is most needed.

The consultation is open to all residents and can be completed on the Parish council’s website.
