The crematorium, near Royal Wootton Bassett, was inspected in June as part of the FBCA’s Crematorium Compliance Scheme, which assesses crematoria against eight key areas including operational procedures, legal compliance, customer service and the quality of facilities.

Inspector Paul Rayson concluded that “the level of service provision [was] outstanding”, with the crematorium achieving full marks in both the Ceremony Facilities and Service & Staff categories.

The inspection was carried out under the FBCA’s enhanced assessment programme, which includes an additional 47 questions relating to service provision.

North Wiltshire Crematorium was among the first crematoria in the country to be assessed under the updated scheme and one of the first to receive a Certificate of Compliance.

Loraine Beckinsale, Manager of North Wiltshire Crematorium, said: “We’re delighted to have earned an overall rating of Outstanding following the inspection.

“We were particularly pleased to score 100% for Service & Staff, because we put families at the heart of everything we do, and in order to provide them with the exceptional care and support we have built our reputation on, we need to have the right people in our crematorium team.

“I am proud of the professionalism and dedication of the North Wiltshire team, who are all so passionate about what they do, and the words of the inspector are a welcome endorsement of the commitment and dedication I see demonstrated every day.”

She added: “With our renovation in late August ahead of our reopening as a SuperVenue in early September, I’m delighted that we’re entering this exciting new chapter for our crematorium with such an excellent inspection outcome.”

The inspection result comes ahead of a major refurbishment at the site, with renovation work due to begin in late August before it reopens as a SuperVenue in early September.

North Wiltshire Crematorium is part of Westerleigh Group, which operates 42 crematoria and cemeteries across England, Scotland and Wales.

The company said membership of the Federation of Burial & Cremation Authorities is voluntary, with not all crematorium operators choosing to take part in the independent inspection programme. It says the assessments provide reassurance that its facilities continue to meet high standards for the families and communities they serve.
