Emergency services attended the scene this morning and remain in place as a precaution while the situation is assessed. There has been no official confirmation on the cause of the smoke or whether anyone was inside at the time.

Road closures are currently in place around the building while emergency crews deal with the incident. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The Mechanics’ Institute, in the town’s Railway Village, is one of Swindon’s most significant heritage buildings. It first opened in 1855 to serve workers of the Great Western Railway, providing education, a library and social space.

Over the years, it became a hub for community life and hosted lectures, meetings and entertainment. The building later fell into disuse in the late twentieth century.

In recent years, the Mechanics’ Institution Trust has been leading efforts to restore the site and return it to public use, recognising its importance to the town’s industrial heritage.

Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council said:

“The Mechanics’ Institute is one of Swindon’s most important historic buildings, so any incident like this is naturally a concern. I want to thank our fire crews for their swift response in attending the scene and ensuring the area is safe. We are in contact with the relevant teams and will continue to monitor the situation closely as more information becomes available.”

Council staff are on site, the fire is small and under control and appears not to have spread to the fabric of the building. We are actively working to make sure the building is secure, and our CCTV team are on the case and are reviewing footage.”

Fire crews remain at the scene while enquiries continue. Further updates are expected once more details are confirmed.
