Since the pandemic, more and more people in Europe have bought motorhomes. Indeed, from September 2020 to June 2021, motorhome sales went up by 46.3 per cent throughout Europe compared to the same period a year earlier.

This is because motorhomes offer many benefits: you’ll be able to travel in a self-sufficient way, and you’ll have the freedom to visit wherever you want, regardless of hotel and Airbnb bookings.

If you’re looking to purchase a motorhome, though, it’s worth knowing about the different classes. Read on to find out more.

Different classes and their impact

Before investing in a motorhome, it’s important to be aware of the impact of different classes. The type of motorhome you buy can affect motorhome insurance costs, licenses and your holiday experience.

There are three types including class A, class B and class C and it’s worth understanding the differences.

Class A

Class A motorhomes are the largest and most luxurious version of the vehicle. In Europe, they’re generally up to 25 feet in length and offer facilities such as fridges, self-contained bathrooms, living spaces, televisions, air conditioning and heating.

This can allow a whole family to comfortably live in the space together during a holiday. These vehicles are usually the most expensive type of motorhome: the initial price tag can be over £50,000, they’ll most likely have the worst fuel efficiency of the classes, and increased costs for ferries and other transport. Nevertheless, they will offer the most comfort.

Class B

A class B motorhome, on the other hand, is the smallest form of motorhome available. They resemble oversized vans rather than Class A motorhomes. Inside, you’ll usually find a small space; there’s enough room to stand up in there, but it’ll still be tight.

Despite this, a class B motorhome will still contain cooking appliances, a toilet and a living area. Plus, these vehicles will be the easiest to drive, have the best fuel efficiency and lower insurance costs.

Class C

Class C acts as a compromise between A and B. This type of motorhome is still compact, but it features a clever overhang that creates more sleeping space. Usually, this type of motorhome can sleep four to six people in relative comfort.

They won’t have the same luxuries as a class A vehicle, but they’ll still be able to look after a family. On top of this, they’ll be cheaper than a class A vehicle, but more expensive than the class B option.

Ultimately, your choice of motorhome will depend on your needs. A class B motorhome is a cheap option perfect for a couple, while a class A vehicle is more expensive – but will house a family.
