5 Reasons Why LEDs Are Better Than Regular Bulbs

At this point there’s no denying that LEDs (or Light Emitting Diodes) are superior to traditional incandescent lights or even compact fluorescent lights (CFL).

LED Light Bulb

So currently they are the peak of lighting solutions, both for indoor and outdoor projects. Let’s talk about their most important advantages.

1. Longer work

Typical incandescent bulbs work at most for about 1 500 hours. Compact fluorescent lamps can shine for 8 000 to 10 000 hours, depending on their quality.

LED lighting beats them both by a long shot – typical LED bulbs’ lifespan can easily reach 50 000 hours (the minimum is 25 000 hours), while high-quality ones can go for up to 60 000 hours.

Judging by that, a decent LED light bulb can stay constantly on for about 7 years before it has to be replaced (the least long-lived one would last for about 3 years).

That’s an equivalent of 3-5 CFLs and at least 21 old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs. Although incandescent bulbs and CFLs have lower initial cost, they’ll be far more expensive in the long run.

2. Energy efficiency

Typical LEDs transforms about 80% (better quality bulbs can go up to 90%) of consumed energy into light.

That makes them clear winners in a duel LED vs incandescent lights – a LED bulb is about 65-75% more efficient than even the best incandescent bulb.

That means incandescent bulbs waste most of the energy generating useless heat. On the other hand, LED light bulbs produce almost no heat (3.4 btu’s/hour compared to 85 for incandescent bulbs) and stay cool to the touch even after hours of staying on.

Due to this, they can’t overheat and pop. By being so energy efficient LED based light bulbs can have far lower wattage – for example, an 8 Watt LED one produce light as bright as 60 Watt incandescents would (although the actual brightness is measured in Lumens, not in Watts). This energy saving will be reflected in far lower electricity bills.

3. Higher quality light

LEDs generate bright, directed and precise light that provides ideal conditions for picking out the details.

Thanks to this they work great working, studying or simply reading. Although being bright, LEDs’ light is very well-balanced and there are no excess contrast levels or too much brightness.

Another feature of LEDs that outclasses incandescent light is very high CRI (Colour Rendering Index), which means that their light is almost identical to natural daylight and every colour viewed under it will have its original depth and hue.

4. “Greener” light source

In contrast to more traditional bulbs, LEDs don’t contain any toxic materials (like mercury used in neon lights), which makes them far safer for both people and the environment.

LED lights are made from fully recyclable parts (everything is solid-state), which makes them the most “green” and planet-friendly lighting option currently available.

In conjunction with long lifespan, low energy consumption and high efficiency, this makes them the best option for anyone that cares about the environment.

5. Variety

LED bulbs come in varying shapes and sizes – you can even find retro-looking vintage LEDs with filament-shaped diodes, big globes or tiny string lights.

There also are many colour options – from cool/warm white, red, green and blue, to almost any colour in the palette (including some blacklight options).

LED technology also enables you to switch the light’s colour on the fly – all you need are compatible bulbs and a remote.

This makes them great for not only simple overhead lights, but also mood and accent lighting – the possibilities are almost limitless.

LED light bulbs are typically dimmable (although it must be stated in the bulb’s description), which allows you to change the light’s intensity output with the help of a compatible dimmer switch.

LED light bulb – the future of lighting available today

There’s no denying that LED technology is the future of the lighting industry – LEDs are sturdy, energy efficient, long-lived and eco-friendly. Thanks to their directional light, none of it is wasted and illuminates only the things it’s supposed to.

Although the up front costs may be higher, they require far less money to operate in the long run and start providing savings in about a month.

They offer a wide spectrum of colour options, and you can even dim most of them. LEDs also vary in shapes and sizes, which makes it easy to pick up just the right ones for any lighting project.

So replace all your old bulbs with LEDs and revel in their superior features today!
