We fact check 5 claims Nigel Farage made as he resigned as Clacton MP

Nigel Farage's surprise resignation as MP for Clacton was more than an announcement of a by-election. During a speech lasting almost half an hour, the Reform UK leader made a series of claims about Parliamentary investigations, media scrutiny, his personal finances and Britain's political system.

Here is a fact check of some of the speech’s biggest talking points.

1. “I’ve absolutely obeyed those rules”

Farage insisted he had complied with Parliament’s Code of Conduct and said he had taken legal advice before making his declarations.

The facts:

Parliament’s Standards Commissioner is currently investigating whether a reported £5 million personal gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne should have been declared under MPs’ financial interests rules.

An investigation does not mean wrongdoing has occurred. The Commissioner’s role is to establish whether the Code of Conduct has been followed before any conclusions are reached.

Farage maintains he has fully complied with the rules and says the gift was unconditional.

Verdict: The investigation is ongoing. No findings have been made.

2. “Standards are now being used as a political tool”

Farage argued the Parliamentary Standards process is being weaponised against politicians who challenge the political establishment.

The facts:

Farage offered no evidence during his speech that the investigation itself was politically motivated.

The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards operates independently of Government and Parliament, investigating complaints under the MPs’ Code of Conduct before reporting any findings.

Whether the investigation is politically motivated is a matter of opinion rather than an established fact.

Verdict: This is Farage’s opinion and has not been independently substantiated.

3. “I need security for the rest of my life”

Farage said repeated attacks and threats mean he will require permanent security and that the Harborne gift would allow him to pay for it.

During the speech he referred to milkshakes being thrown over him, protesters attacking his car, an attack on his home and frequent online death threats. He also claimed Parliament reduced funding for his security after he became an MP.

The facts:

Farage has been the victim of several well-documented incidents during his political career, including having milkshakes thrown at him during election campaigns.

The exact level of security funding provided to MPs is not publicly disclosed for obvious security reasons, meaning his claims about funding changes cannot be independently verified.

Verdict: There is clear evidence Farage has faced repeated abuse and attacks, but some details of his security arrangements cannot be independently verified.

4. “George Cottrell’s support has been turned into another attack”

Farage dismissed questions surrounding George Cottrell, a long-time associate who has helped with his security and political operation.

The facts:

Media reports have alleged that Cottrell funded security, accommodation and social media support before Farage entered Parliament, raising questions over whether those benefits should have been declared.

Cottrell was convicted of wire fraud in the United States in 2017. Farage has denied any wrongdoing and insists all relevant rules have been followed. The Standards investigation has not reached any conclusions.

Verdict: The allegations are being scrutinised publicly, but no findings of wrongdoing have been made.

5. “The establishment is trying to stop Reform”

Farage claimed Labour, the Conservatives, parts of Whitehall and sections of the media are attempting to prevent Reform UK from winning power. He cited the Standards investigation, media reporting, changes to electoral arrangements and scrutiny of party donors as evidence.

The facts:

There is no independent evidence demonstrating the existence of a coordinated campaign involving government, Parliament and the media to stop Reform UK. However, Reform’s political growth is undeniable.

The party has risen sharply in national opinion polls, won significant gains at May’s local elections and has become one of the country’s fastest-growing political movements.

Whether increased scrutiny is the consequence of that growth or evidence of political targeting is ultimately for readers to judge.

Verdict: Reform’s growth is supported by election results. Claims of a coordinated establishment campaign remain unproven.

What does this mean for Swindon?

Whatever the outcome of the Parliamentary investigation or the forthcoming Clacton by-election, Reform UK’s future matters locally.

In May, the party achieved its biggest ever breakthrough in Swindon, contesting every borough council seat and winning 14 councillors. The result transformed Reform from having no representation into one of the council’s largest political groups.

A packed campaign event in Swindon earlier this year also demonstrated the strength of the party’s local support.

If Farage comfortably wins the Clacton by-election, it is likely to energise Reform activists across the country, including in Swindon, where the party will be hoping to build on its local election success ahead of the next General Election.

If, however, the controversy surrounding the Standards investigation begins to damage public confidence, the by-election could become an early test of whether Reform’s recent momentum can be sustained.

Either way, the result will be watched closely by Reform supporters and political opponents alike, not just in Westminster, but in towns such as Swindon where the party has rapidly established itself as a significant political force.
