The 29-year-old joins from Fleetwood Town, subject to EFL approval, becoming Ian Holloway’s third signing of the summer.
Virtue arrives with more than 240 senior appearances in the English Football League, having represented Fleetwood Town, Blackpool, Lincoln City and Notts County. He also spent time in the youth systems at Chelsea and Liverpool, captaining Liverpool’s Under-23 side before making his senior breakthrough.
He made 89 appearances during his two seasons at Fleetwood, contributing 19 goals and assists. His standout 2024/25 campaign saw him score nine league goals from midfield.
The move also reunites Virtue with defender Mitch Clark, who completed his own switch to the Nigel Eady County Ground earlier this summer after leaving Fleetwood.
Speaking after completing the move, Virtue said: “Obviously there’s one aim, everyone knows it, and you want to be successful in your football career, the club wants to be successful, so why would I not want to join.
“It’s always nice to come back in, there’s always a bit of nerves meeting a new set of lads, and a new staff, but they’ve all been really helpful and accommodating and I’m looking forward to kicking on.”
Virtue is regarded as an energetic, attack-minded midfielder and adds further experience to Holloway’s squad as preparations continue for the 2026/27 campaign.
Swindon24 Sports Reporter Ian Howard said:
“Virtue is a good addition for Town as a senior player with plenty of experience of playing in this division. He can chip in with goals from midfield which is always useful.
Perhaps the most useful thing is that he has already played alongside Mitch Clark and so the pair should settle quickly into the Swindon side. I am excited by the experience that the new signings bring to help balance the youtfull side from last season.”
His arrival follows the signings of Mitch Clark and defender Stephan Negru as Swindon continue to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.
