Society Without Abuse (SWA) is bringing back its Firewalk fundraiser after last year’s event raised more than £14,000.
The challenge will take place at Swindon Cricket Club on Friday 23 October, with participants facing hot coals reaching temperatures of up to 649°C (1,200°F).
Last year, 30 people took part in the event, raising vital funds to help the charity support people affected by domestic abuse.
Organisers are now hoping to attract even more participants for the second Firewalk, with discounted early bird registration available until Sunday 11 October.
Those signing up will receive professional coaching before attempting the barefoot walk across the burning coals.
The challenge is intended to reflect the courage and determination of domestic abuse survivors who have escaped harmful relationships and worked to rebuild their lives.
Natasha Moyles, Operations Manager at SWA, said:
“The SWA Firewalk is such an empowering evening. Survivors of domestic abuse have walked through the metaphoric coals to escape the trauma they’ve experienced.
“By giving people a taste of the fear, determination and sense of achievement that they have gone through, we hope to bring conversations around domestic abuse out in the open.
“All the money raised will be put to use supporting our work in breaking cycles of abuse, supporting those recovering from the trauma, and empowering the next generation to spot the red flags and expect more from their own relationships, as after all, feeling safe and happy in your relationships is a human right.”
Visitors who would prefer not to take on the Firewalk will also have the opportunity to get involved in other activities.
A Lego Walk will be available for spectators in exchange for a small donation, alongside a Lego creative zone and family games for younger visitors.
Food will be served by Gourmet 58 and Samosas2Go, both of which are returning following last year’s event.
Natasha added:
“We’d love to see as many Firewalkers and their supporters as possible. It’ll be a great night whether you’re baring your sole or cheering on from the sidelines.”
Early bird entry costs £20 per person or £70 for a team of four, with participants also expected to raise a minimum of £95 each in sponsorship.
SWA provides support to people recovering from domestic abuse, while also working to prevent future abuse through education and raising awareness of unhealthy relationships.
The event will take place on the evening of Friday 23 October at Swindon Cricket Club.
