The red poppy, a long-standing tribute to those who have served and died in the armed forces, now adorns civic buildings and lampposts throughout the town.

Council Leader Jim Robbins said the move aims to bring the community together and ensure remembrance remains respectful and inclusive.

“November is a time to remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” he said.

“The poppies that have been installed on lampposts across the Borough give the opportunity for residents to remember those brave people on a daily basis while travelling on our roads.

“I’d also encourage residents to attend the two remembrance events taking place at the Cenotaph in the town centre this Sunday and on Remembrance Day itself, next Tuesday.”

The switch to poppies during this period is intended solely to reinforce the solemn nature of remembrance.

Recent national debate has seen concerns raised over how flags are used in public displays, with some symbols being co-opted by far-right groups. Swindon’s approach seeks to honour the country’s servicemen and women.

Poppy installations have been specially commissioned and placed across the town. Local schools, businesses and community organisations are being encouraged to take part by creating their own displays.
