Previously trading as Howie’s Bakehouse and Café, the Victoria Road premises has relaunched as ‘Studio’ – an art café focused on speciality coffee, light bites and showcasing local creative talent.

The new venture is being led by local radio host Howard Taylor, who said the aim was to create a calmer daytime space while supporting independent artists. Howard Taylor said:

“We wanted to create somewhere people could come not just for a coffee or lunch, but to slow down a bit and enjoy being in the space.

There’s so much creative talent in Swindon that often doesn’t get enough visibility, so combining an independent café with local and national art just felt like the right fit for Old Town.”

Artwork from Swindon-based artist Donna B is currently on display, with plans to introduce rotating pieces from other local creatives in the coming months.

The reopening comes amid signs of renewed confidence among independent traders in Old Town.

A new vintage furniture and interiors shop, Haus & Home, has also opened on Victoria Road this month, while the former Boots unit on Wood Street is undergoing refurbishment.

Kris Talikowski, Chair of the Old Town business association said the developments were a positive sign for the area:

“It’s genuinely positive to see more independent retail and hospitality businesses opening in Old Town.

We’ve built a strong evening economy over recent years, but there needs to be far more focus on daytime footfall and creating reasons for people to spend time here during the day as well.

“We’ll also be pleased to see the new administration abolish the proposed parking hikes, because accessibility and affordability are critical if independent businesses are going to thrive.”
