A Council-run care home has been rated ‘Good’ in all categories following a recent inspection.

Whitbourne House in Park South, which cares for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, was visited by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) just a few weeks ago.

The latest ‘Good’ rating means that both of the Council’s residential care homes now have a ‘Good’ rating, following a similar inspection at Fessey House earlier this year.

During the visit inspectors found that residents received good care from skilled and knowledgeable members of staff and that the home was well led by the manager.

The Commission rated the home ‘Good’ across the board and made particular mention of the levels of independence that the residents were able to enjoy and how they were supported in “the least restrictive way possible”.

Inspectors said: “People told us staff were caring. Staff consistently enabled people to receive good care from staff who knew them well.”

They also noted that “people were supported to maintain good health and to meet their nutritional needs” and that the residents “had access to activities to prevent social isolation”.

During an inspection in October last year, the CQC rated the home ‘Requires Improvement’, and this year’s inspection was carried out to see if progress had been made. Inspectors were happy to report that significant improvements had been implemented.

Councillor Brian Ford, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “I am delighted with the results of the latest CQC report and I would like to thank everybody at Whitbourne House who has worked so hard to make the home a safe and caring environment for the residents.

“The inspectors praised different aspects of the service and I am particularly proud to hear that the residents are consistently treated with dignity and respect and that staff are able to tailor their care to the individual needs of the residents.

“I have every confidence that we will continue to deliver high standards of care at Whitbourne House.”

Sharron Black, In-House Provider Operational Manager at Whitbourne House, said: “We are extremely proud of our service here at Whitbourne House and staff are delighted to have achieved such a positive inspection.

“It has been an enjoyable journey that enabled us to transform the lives of our residents, freshen up the environment and empower our staff to unlock their huge potential for the benefit of people using our service.”
