Are you thinking about going on a cycling tour?

If so, you’re choosing one of the most liberating and exciting ways to travel. The simplicity of travelling by bike is one thing, but it opens the door to a world of possibilities.

cycling trips

It gives you the freedom to go anywhere, explore different cultures and landscapes, build your fitness, and enjoy the fresh air.

Yet it’s not something you can simply jump – or cycle – into without any planning. In fact, there are many different points you have to consider before starting your adventure.

To ensure you get off to the right start, this guide will provide the tips needed for planning an unforgettable cycling tour.

Have the right bike

First of all, you need to select the right bike for your trip. You want a bike that is not only durable and up for taking on different terrains but also provides a comfortable riding position.

You’re going to be on the bike for a long time each day, so you never want to skimp on the saddle. You’ll also want a bike where it’s possible to mount a rack or pannier to ensure you can take your luggage with you.

When looking for the right bike to fit the bill, it makes sense to go for one specially designed for touring. You can find womens touring bikes that are ideal for any long-distance travelling, as well as plenty of options for men.

Pick your equipment

The bike is only the start. As you would expect, a cycling tour involves various different pieces of equipment. You’ll want a repair kit for your bike, for example. The last thing you want is to suffer a punctured tyre in the middle of nowhere.

You’ll also want a tent and sleeping bag for when you decide to rest up for the night.

Of course, there are other items like appropriate cycling clothing, power banks, and travel documents to make your tour a more comfortable one.

Decide on a destination

Unless you’re going to stick with a local cycle tour, you’ll have to settle on the right destination for your journey. Now, this is more difficult than it may seem. The reason: there are so many fantastic destinations on offer when it comes to a memorable cycling trip.

When it comes to picking the right destination, consider your budget and the length of your trip. If you’re planning a particularly long tour, for instance, you could even venture into multiple countries.

Save, save, save!

A cycling tour can be an affordable way to explore a particular destination. Yet despite this, you’ll still need to have an ample amount of money in the bank to cover your costs.

Cycling will make you hungry, so you have to budget for an adequate amount of groceries each day. Plus, camping fees can mount up, and you could face unexpected expenses like gear replacement.

If you’re truly budgeting, you may be able to get away with about £10 each day. However, it’s always better to go with a higher total to make your tour more comfortable.
