Home Clearance Outlet has moved into the former Poundland unit at the Brunel Shopping Centre, bringing the large space back into use after it closed last year.

The store occupies around 6,000 square feet and sells brand new furniture at discounted prices, sourced from suppliers across the UK.

Its range includes sofas and chairs, from compact seating to larger cinema-style designs, as well as beds, including divan and ottoman styles, and mattresses.

The Swindon opening is the retailer’s third physical location, following stores in Telford and Gloucester, and marks a move into a town centre setting rather than an out-of-town retail park.

Tim Knowles, Managing Director at FI Real Estate Management, said the opening showed continued efforts to refresh the shopping centre’s offer.

“This is another good news story for the town centre and the local community,” he said. “The team at The Brunel Centre are continuing to focus on retailers that add value and choice to the shopping experience for visitors, and Home Clearance is another great addition that complements our existing retail partners.”

The new store opens during a period of gradual change for Swindon town centre, with a mix of regeneration projects and new uses replacing empty retail space.

While a single shop is unlikely to reverse wider challenges facing the high street, the reopening of a prominent unit removes an empty frontage and brings new activity to a busy part of the centre.

Furniture and homeware retailers are increasingly seen as viable town centre uses, offering destination shopping that encourages longer visits.

Home Clearance Outlet also trades online, but its decision to invest in a physical store in Swindon suggests confidence in the town centre when space, cost and footfall align.
