The building has been unsafe since the 1980s after sustaining storm damage. It has remained fenced off for decades as attempts to find a viable restoration plan failed.
South Swindon Parish Council took over management of Queen’s Park in 2019. It says it explored a range of possibilities for the site before deciding that full removal was the safest and most practical option. The decision followed discussions with heritage specialists, Historic England and Swindon Borough Council.
The Council aims to create a new public space once the structure is cleared. Early suggestions include bringing back a café with outdoor seating and improving planting in the area. The history of the Hothouse and the wider park will be recognised through interpretation panels and information boards.
A Council spokesperson said: “We are committed to preserving the memory of this historic structure while creating a new, safe and accessible space.”
Residents will be asked for their views as plans for the site progress.
The removal work is expected to take several weeks. Visitors are being advised that there may be temporary disruption during the project
