Swindon Borough Council has launched a thirteen week public survey on an updated Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan. It focuses on twenty five proposed schemes aimed at improving safety, accessibility and ease of travel for pedestrians and cyclists.
The refreshed plan removes schemes no longer considered viable and updates others following feasibility work and recent construction.
One proposal is a Northern Flyer cycle route, created by upgrading existing paths to link the town centre with Tadpole Garden Village and other growing communities in North Swindon.
If approved, it would complete the Flyer-branded network, which already includes the Eastern, Southern and Western Flyer routes.
The Council is also considering a connection between the end of the Southern Flyer on Farnsby Street and the new cycling infrastructure now in place on Fleming Way and Holbrook Way.
Residents’ views will help determine which schemes the Council should prioritise when applying for future grants and other funding. As further money becomes available, the authority plans to continue feasibility work and deliver projects over the next decade.
The revised strategy supports long-term goals to create a Fairer, Better and Greener Swindon. It also aligns with the Local Transport Plan and the Decarbonisation Framework, which is due to go before the Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday 3 December.
The consultation closes on 20 February 2026, and feedback can be submitted through an online survey.
Councillor Chris Watts, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:
“This update to Swindon’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan builds on the foundations laid in 2022 and sets out a clear vision for a safer, more inclusive and accessible network. By prioritising walking and cycling, we aim to make active travel the natural choice for everyday journeys, helping reduce carbon emissions, improve health and create a more connected borough.
“I encourage anyone with an interest in walking or cycling to take part and help shape the future of the networks they use for travel, fitness or fun. We’re committed to listening, and this consultation is another chance for residents to have their say so we’re ready to act when funding becomes available.”

i am in a wheelchair and until the pathways are in decent state i will us the road/cycle path, it’s safer for me
The cycle paths/pedestrian markings need to be addressed in local paths… they seem to be marked out incorrectly! Please apply common sense when marking the path section for (i)walkers & their dogs and (ii)the path for cyclists. Assign the walkers to use the side next to the grass area. This would allow (I) freedom for walkers to extend leads to allow their dog leads to allow dogs to amble/ investigate the grass. (ii)this would help cyclists avoid having to slow down to avoid dogs /tangle in leads. (example Merlin way to White Hart Stratton as well as Dorcan school to Morrisons)
Also there are many raised drains which are dangerous for cyclist especially if travelling in dark – example Merlin way to white hart, Oxford Road
