The celebrations begin with the Christmas Lights Switch On on Friday 28 November. This free event will feature live music and dance performances, culminating in the illumination of Lydiard’s Christmas tree.

In December, the state rooms of Lydiard House Museum will be dressed in seasonal décor, including a traditional kissing ball and real Christmas tree. Guests can enjoy the festive surroundings on a self-guided visit or join a special guided tour, which includes cream tea.

On Saturday 7 December, participants can take part in the Santa v Rudolf Run. The charity event offers 3km and 5km routes, with walkers, joggers and runners of all abilities welcome. Children, dogs and pushchairs can also join in the fun.

Carols by Candlelight will take place at St Mary’s Church on Tuesday 9 and Tuesday 16 December. The event includes traditional carols and festive readings in a historic setting.

Lydiard Park Hotel will host a Festive Paint and Sip night on Wednesday 10 December. Guests can follow step-by-step painting instructions while enjoying seasonal drinks from the bar. No previous experience is necessary.

On Friday 12 December, visitors can settle in for an evening of Christmas Ghost Stories inside Lydiard House Museum. These chilling tales continue the old tradition of sharing supernatural stories during the festive season.

Children will have the chance to meet Santa on Sunday 14 December at Lydiard Park Hotel. The experience includes festive crafts and an early Christmas present.

Lydiard Park Hotel will also host a series of Christmas parties this year. For £55 per person, guests will receive a welcome drink, a traditional Christmas meal, dessert and a disco. Small groups can book onto shared party nights.

The season will end with a New Year’s Eve Party on Wednesday 31 December. Attendees will enjoy fizz and canapés on arrival, followed by dinner, dessert, and a disco to welcome 2026.

Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, said:

“Lydiard is a pretty magical location all through the year, but the House has something extra special to it at Christmas.

“I’m happy that we’re able to offer so much interesting activity to light up the darker months.

“There will be something for kids wanting to meet Santa, families after cream tea with a side of history, or those who love the spookier side of the holidays.

“Anyone looking for fun Christmas activities in a beautiful setting should check Lydiard out this winter.”
