Around 800 pieces by the Sheffield-born artist will be offered without reserve at the auction on Tuesday 26 November. The sale includes bronzes, drawings and sculptures made from found objects – many of which have never been sold publicly before.
Fullard, who was born in 1923, became known for his distinctive post-war style and use of unconventional materials. His early studies at Sheffield College of Art were interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served in the 17th/21st Lancers and was seriously wounded in the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944.
His wartime experiences had a lasting impact and heavily influenced his later work. After the war, he studied at the Royal College of Art and went on to teach at Chelsea School of Art. His work now features in major collections, including the Tate, the V&A and the Arts Council.
Public sculptures by Fullard can be found in Sheffield, Norwich and other UK cities.
The upcoming auction features a wide range of his work, from small sketches and mixed media pieces to large-scale sculptures – including one that stands nearly six feet tall.
Gareth Wasp, Head Auctioneer at RWB Auctions, said:
“Some of the sketches have a quiet depth to them that feels very personal.
“You can see how ideas first explored in his drawings later found their way into his sculptures.”
John Fullard, the artist’s nephew, shared memories of visiting his uncle’s studio in Chelsea.
“I used to visit George in Chelsea, watching him work with an intensity and energy that lives on in his drawings and sculpture,” he said.
“George’s work spans tenderness and toughness, shaped by wartime injury, family and a fierce sense of fairness.”
“I hope this sale brings renewed interest in the full range of his work and helps to restore his place in British art.”
Public viewings for the sale will take place at RWB Auctions, 144 High Street, Royal Wootton Bassett, on Sunday 24 November from 9.30am to 4.30pm, and Monday 25 November from 9.30am to 7pm.
