The win at Priestfield Stadium sees Town maintain pressure in the race for promotion from League Two with just eight fixtures left to play.
It was a challenging opening forty five minutes, with the hosts limiting Swindon’s attacking opportunities and keeping the game tight before the break.
Town improved after half time and eventually made the pressure count in the 68th minute. Aaron Drinan seized on a breakaway chance to score his first goal after a string of near misses.
Substitute Fletcher Holman added a second in the 86th minute, shortly after coming off the bench, to seal an important three points on the road.
Swindon24 sports reporter Ian Howard, speaking shortly after the final whistle, said:
“It was really painful at times, a terrible first half.
“But they picked it up in the second half. Aaron Drinan broke his duck on 68 minutes with a breakaway goal and then Holman came on as a substitute and scored in the 86th minute.
“It’s the first win since 1986 at that ground, which is the real story tonight.”
He added:
“We’re now nine points clear of Chesterfield, who are just outside the play-off zone, and three points behind Cambridge United in the automatic promotion places.
“It’s a really good result and a much-needed lift for Town.”
Howard also praised the squad’s resilience during a tense run in.
“They’ve coped with the pressure of having to win tonight, which I didn’t think they would if I’m honest,” he said. “They’ve come away with a really hard-ground-out result and it’s still all to play for.”
Attention now turns to Saturday’s clash with Tranmere Rovers, who sit near the foot of the table.
Despite their position, Howard urged caution.
“Tranmere are right down the bottom of the league, but that doesn’t mean anything,” he said. “There are still some competitive teams to play and eight games left. I believe in Ian Holloway, I think he’s got a great approach to the game and I think he’ll get us there.”
With momentum building, supporters are beginning to sense an opportunity.
“Crowds are starting to increase and it’s going to get very exciting as we get towards the end of the season,” he said. “You could be a glory hunter, come along and join the party.”
