A smart city can be defined as an urban area that makes use of data sensors all over the city to supply data that is then used to manage resources and assets in an efficient manner.

Generally speaking, a smart city makes use of modern ICT infrastructure to collect data about citizens and the various infrastructures in the city to ensure that all these are efficiently managed. In this write-up, we shall discuss some of the things that make an urban area to be called a smart city. You can visit advancecities.com to learn more.

  1. Smart infrastructure

A smart city should have smart infrastructure that is interconnected. It should have smart lighting, smart parking and other smart innovations that help in the management of the streets. For instance, with smart lighting, areas in the city where there are no occupants can have their lighting dimmed to save on the cost of energy. Smart parking can guide users on where they can easily find parking for their vehicles.

  1. Smart buildings and properties

Smart buildings are part and parcel of a smart city. They can utilise a number of systems to ensure that the buildings are secure and well taken care of. Safety and security systems will make it possible for remote monitoring of buildings. The smart buildings can be supported through biometric, smart cameras, IP surveillance and wireless alarms. Smart buildings also incorporate sprinkler systems and smart gardens that can be connected to technology so that they monitor soil moisture and regulate the amount of water availed to plants.

  1. Smart industries

There are many ways that industries can take advantage of the internet and develop a smart environment for their operations. The idea of forest fire detection can help in detecting combustion gases and define some alert zones where fire outbreaks occur. Air and noise pollutions can also be detected and controlled where necessary. Other things that can be smartly detected are earthquakes, landslides, radiation levels and so on. All these can then be dealt with appropriately.

  1. Smart city services

Connected smart technologies can help in a number of ways to provide quick and appropriate services to the city residents. There are smart kiosks that can provide the city with services such IP surveillance, WiFi services, digital signage, public announcements and other services such as integration of environmental sensors and mobile phone charging.

  1. Smart energy management

Another aspect of a smart city is the manner in which they manage their energy. Smart grids can help monitor power requirements and deliver electricity and gas to places it is required. The utility companies are provided with a demand and response means for providing their services. Smart meters can provide real-time information and data about electricity and gas usage so that these utility companies can adjust their supply accordingly.

  1. Smart water management

Water is another very important component of the smart city. The provision of adequate and clean water can be monitored by use of smart gadgets. Things such as chemical leakages and contamination of water can be monitored. Pollution levels in the seas and river floods can all be monitored in a smart manner and data provided for appropriate action to be taken.
