Coate Roundabout improvements start next Monday

The resurfacing and relining of a busy Swindon roundabout will now take place in a fortnight’s time after the original work was rescheduled.

Coate Roundabout was due to be improved in August, but contractual issues meant the work was put on hold.

Following a retendering process, the new surface will be laid overnight from Monday, 15 October. The scheme is expected to take eight nights to complete (excluding the weekend of 20 to 21 October) and will be carried out between 8pm and 6am.

There will be a full closure of the roundabout from all approaches during this time, with no access to Coate Water Country Park.

Signposted diversion routes will be in place and emergency vehicles will still be able to access the Great Western Hospital at all times, although other vehicles will have to follow the diversion routes to access the hospital.

Arrangements will also be made to maintain access to businesses adjacent to the roundabout.

Councillor Maureen Penny, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and the Environment, said: “This work forms part of our annual road improvement programme and will see much needed investment in one of our key junctions.

“Unfortunately, the road lining and carriageway is badly worn and needs to be replaced so we are keen to get the work done now before it deteriorates further over the winter.

“We appreciate this will cause some inconvenience to drivers, which is why the work is taking place at night, and we would like to thank motorists and local residents for their patience while these improvements are being carried out.”
