More than 160 people turned out to celebrate the bravery, dedication and hard work of police officers, staff, volunteers and members of the public at Wiltshire Police’s Force Awards Ceremony.
The prestigious event took place at The Corn Exchange in Devizes last night (28 February 2018) and saw almost 60 recipients take to the stage to collect their certificates.
Chief Constable Mike Veale opened and closed the ceremony, paying tribute to the public service and personal sacrifices of those celebrated.
In what will be his last public event as Chief of Wiltshire Police, he said: “Every time we have one of these events my heart pumps with joy, pride and admiration for everyone who works for us – whether they are officers, staff or volunteers.
“I hope everyone here tonight has enjoyed your glimpse into the work of our Force and has enjoyed the opportunity to say thank you for every outstanding, personal contribution given by our recipients and their families.
“We have heard some incredible and amazing insights into Wiltshire Police and this is a timely reminder that I serve alongside some talented, outstanding professionals.
“Tonight is a reminder that Wiltshire Police is a special force with some very special people. We are one of the best forces in the country because of the people in this room.”
He also extended his thanks to the Force’s partners and the members of the public who support the police in keeping Wiltshire safe.
The range of the prizes handed out last night included Long Service and Good Conduct awards, Chief Constable’s Commendations, Certificates of Excellence, Certificates or Recognition and Outstanding Teamwork Awards.
There was also the National Police Promotion Framework Police Management Award, the Developing Leaders Programme Graduation Certificate and the Innovation and Creativity Award.
The ceremony was overseen by the Master of Ceremonies Supt Dave Minty and included distinguished guests Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon Angus Macpherson, Lord Lieutenant Mrs Sarah Troughton and High Sheriff Lady Penny Marland.
Speaking afterwards, Mr Macpherson said: “It was an honour to attend this awards ceremony and celebrate the outstanding work of the officers and staff of Wiltshire Police.
“It is hugely important that these hard working, diligent and brave people have been recognised in this way and I offer my wholehearted congratulations to all the recipients.
“Policing, whether as a civilian or as a warranted officer, is more than just a job. It is a vocation and a way of life and at its heart it is all about people.
“Very often police officers and staff are dealing with people going through troubling, difficult and distressing times, but through these awards we can see so many examples of the phrase “treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself”.”
