The college is offering a range of affordable sessions where people can make their own decorations, personalised gifts and Christmas clothing.

The workshops form part of its Adult Leisure programme and are open to people of all abilities, including those with no previous crafting experience.

Activities include needle-felting, jewellery making and painting watercolour Christmas cards.

A new Christmas Jumper Workshop is also being introduced, giving participants the opportunity to turn a plain jumper into a festive creation with help from an experienced tutor.

The college says the workshop is unique to Swindon and offers an opportunity to create something that can be worn year after year.

Andrea, who has already booked a place on the course, said:

“I’ve been enjoying looking for inspiration and channelling my inner Alexander McQueen.

“This is going to get me in the Christmas mood and give me a good laugh with the rest of the class.

“Not only that, but it’s super sustainable! I’ll bring the jumper out every year.”

Alongside learning practical skills, the sessions are designed to bring people together and provide a break from their everyday routines.

New College Swindon hopes the workshops will help residents meet new people, stay mentally active and develop their creativity in a relaxed environment.

The college is also encouraging local businesses to consider the sessions as an alternative to traditional workplace Christmas parties.

Participants will be able to take home their handmade creations, whether to keep as festive decorations or give to friends and family.

Further information about the workshops, including how to book, is available at www.newcollege.ac.uk/courses/christmas/
