Abbie, a Year 11 student at Ridgeway School and a dedicated athlete and coach with Swindon Lightning Cheerleading Club, died on 30 July.
In a heartfelt tribute, Swindon Lightning described Abbie as someone whose kindness, encouragement and passion for cheerleading touched the lives of countless athletes, coaches and families.
The club said:
“It is with the deepest sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beautiful athlete and coach, Abbie.
“There are simply no words that feel enough.
“Abbie was a much-loved member of our Swindon Lightning family. Her kindness, infectious smile, unwavering encouragement and love for cheerleading touched the lives of so many athletes, coaches and families over the years.
“She brought so much light to our gym, and her loss has left us all heartbroken.”
The club added that its thoughts, love and deepest condolences are with Abbie’s family and loved ones during what it described as an unimaginable time.
With the blessing of Abbie’s mother, Becky, Swindon Lightning opened its doors on Sunday evening for athletes, coaches, families, friends and former members to come together to remember her.
The gathering began with Shimmer athletes and their parents before opening to current and former athletes, coaches, families and friends.
Those attending were invited to wear bright cheerleading kit or Swindon Lightning clothing from over the years in honour of Abbie’s love for the sport and the bright, joyful personality she shared with everyone around her.
Public reports have linked her death to a boat explosion off the coast of Bayahíbe, although the circumstances have not been formally confirmed by the family or authorities.
Abbie’s death has also deeply affected the wider Swindon community. In a letter to parents, Ridgeway School headteacher Helen Buttery described her as “a bright light” within the Year 11 community.
She wrote:
“I am incredibly sad to write and share with you that one of our Year 11 students, Abbie Lainton, has died in a tragic accident.
“Abbie was much loved at Ridgeway by staff and students alike and was a bright light in our Year 11 community.
“Our love and thoughts are with Abbie’s family, and I know you will join us in also keeping them in your thoughts.”
A GoFundMe page has also been launched to support Abbie’s family following the tragedy.
In a message on the fundraising page, organiser Becky Jamieson wrote:
“Abbie had her whole life ahead of her. She should have been enjoying the summer with her friends and looking forward to receiving her GCSE results.
“She was so loved by her family, friends and everyone who knew her.
“This page has been set up to support the family through this unimaginable time. For Abbie, forever 16, forever loved and never forgotten.”
Swindon Lightning ended its tribute with a message that reflected the love felt throughout the club and the wider cheerleading community.
“We love you so much. Forever a part of our Lightning family.”
