A former storage room on a ward at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been converted into a new day room for patients and their families, following support from local donors.

The space on Saturn Ward at Great Western Hospital has been redesigned to offer older patients a comfortable area away from their bedside.

Funded entirely through community donations to Brighter Futures, the room now features dining tables, soft seating and a calmer setting for patients to spend time with relatives or enjoy meals outside the ward bay.

Ward Manager Nicola Lennon, who oversaw the project, said:

“This space allows our patients to step away from their bed space, spend meaningful time with family, and regain a sense of normality. It promotes independence, encourages social interaction, and supports recovery in a really positive way.”

Staff say supporting patients to get out of bed and socialise can help reduce deconditioning, particularly among older people during longer stays in hospital.

The new room is also giving families access to a quieter and more private space during what can be a difficult and emotional time.

Catherine Weaver, Associate Director of Charitable Funds at Brighter Futures, said:

“This is a fantastic example of how donations from our local community can make a real difference to patient care. By enhancing spaces like this, we can improve wellbeing, dignity and recovery for patients, while also supporting their families.”

The initiative is part of broader work across the Trust aimed at improving wellbeing and delivering more person-centred care beyond core NHS services.

Brighter Futures funds projects that sit outside standard NHS budgets, supporting patients, families and staff across Swindon and surrounding areas.
