Global pharma firm to create up to 100 Swindon jobs

A global life sciences company planning to create up to 100 jobs in Swindon has thrown its support behind a new inward investment campaign while stepping up recruitment.

Thermo Fisher Scientific raised the ‘Swindon: Make it Here’ flag at its Kingfisher Drive site this week, backing the council-led initiative to promote the town as a centre for advanced manufacturing, innovation and skills.

The move comes as the firm expands its sterile drug manufacturing operations and recruits for a number of quality-focused roles linked to that growth.

Thermo Fisher has operated in Swindon for more than 50 years and employs around 400 people locally.

The company has invested heavily in its local site in recent years, including a reported 200 million US dollars since 2020 to support the production of vaccines and pharmaceutical treatments.

That investment is now being reflected in its hiring plans.

The business is seeking quality professionals with analytical and problem-solving skills, experience of working in GMP manufacturing environments, and the ability to operate within tightly regulated production processes.

The recruitment drive forms part of a wider expansion of its sterile drug product development and commercial manufacturing capacity, aimed at meeting continued global demand for medicines, therapies and vaccines.

In Swindon, this is expected to increase demand for skilled workers in quality assurance, compliance and laboratory-based manufacturing support.

The announcement is likely to be seen as a vote of confidence in Swindon’s position within the life sciences and advanced manufacturing sectors.

However, roles requiring GMP experience and pharmaceutical manufacturing knowledge are specialist, and competition for that talent remains strong in established clusters such as Oxford and Cambridge.

For now, the expansion signals continued commitment to Swindon and offers new opportunities for those with the right technical skills to join the company’s next phase of growth.
