Reverend Simon Stevenette, Vicar of Christ Church and St Mary’s in Old Town, has been in hospital for several weeks. While initial treatment for sepsis was successful, doctors have since confirmed the infection has reached his heart.

He now requires open-heart surgery to replace part of his aorta and strengthen his heart. A transfer to a specialist London hospital is expected once a bed becomes available.

Despite the setback, Reverend Stevenette has expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the Swindon community.

“It’s been overwhelming,” Reverend Stevenette said.

“Every message, every prayer, every bit of kindness has lifted me.

“I’ve read every single one, they’ve given me courage and reminded me how much love there is in this town.

“I’m trusting God and the incredible doctors caring for me.”

More than £1,560 has been raised so far for Sepsis Research FEAT, a UK charity supporting research into the life-threatening condition. The fundraising campaign was set up in his name earlier this month.

The vicar, who has served the Old Town community for 25 years, is widely known for his compassion and commitment to supporting others through both personal hardship and celebration.

In recent days, hundreds of messages of support have poured in on social media, many reflecting on his personal impact over the years.

Simon’s son, Hugo Stevenette, 21, who launched the fundraiser said:

“we’re bowled over by the support that people have shown, it’s been such a tough time for the family, but people have been so generous with their words. It’s made me so proud of Dad and all he has done for our community”

Now, the community is giving that care back. Hundreds of messages have flooded in across social media, from parishioners, schoolchildren, colleagues, and friends, expressing love and hope for his recovery.

“So much love for this man and his family, praying for a complete recovery.” – Adrian Scott

“Get well soon – great kind man… married us in 2009. Always remember that day.” – Nigel Green

“He saw me through the worst time of my life after losing my son. No one could have been kinder.” – Valerie Lowes

“Simon, you radiate kindness. I have the fondest childhood memories thanks to you.” – Kristen Leigh Bryden

“Swindon needs you. Get well soon, you’re lovely.” – Clare Kingston

“Love and prayers for a full recovery — you’re one of Swindon’s gems.” – The Kelly Foundation

“We’re with you, Simon.” – Paul Freeland

Christ Church continues to hold prayer gatherings in support of Reverend Stevenette and his family.

Swindon Borough Council leader Jim Robbins was among those to publicly wish the vicar a full recovery, writing:

“Wishing you all the best, Simon. Hopefully you’ll be on the mend soon. Great to see the lovely messages for you.”

Reverend Stevenette added:

“If sharing my story helps others spot sepsis earlier, then something good will have come from all this.”
