Have you considered fostering a child? You may just be one of the people or couples that demonstrate the key traits needed for this exciting calling. Read on to find out if you would make a suitable foster carer.

Stable Family Life

Because a foster carer takes care of foster children who have all experienced some kind of trauma, it is essential to provide them with a stable home. It is vital that they are cared for in a settled environment to help them overcome previous inconsistencies in care. You should have a good relationship with your biological children, partner, and extended family as one of them might need to take over for you during an unforeseen emergency.

Your fostering agency will check to see that you can provide a foster child with stability and that you are supported. This is in the best interests of the child.

Effective Management of Discipline

Every child needs boundaries. However, dealing with acting out must never involve physical punishment. If you and your partner are consistent in how you handle conflict and are able to deal pleasantly with some of the common behaviours exhibited by children in care, you could be one of the couples (or even a single person) that is being called on to help these vulnerable young people. Positive guidance must also be given to help the child have healthy self-esteem.

Being a Team Player

Although a foster child will stay in your home, various other people will play a key role in their life. This includes social workers and other employees. You will receive in-depth training but will also need to lean on the guidance of this team. You should be able to take their advice on board and not be overly sensitive to constructive criticism. All of this is designed to provide the child with the best opportunity for a normal and happy life. If this is your aim too, speak to the team at fosteringpeople.co.uk.

Self-Care and Health

You need to have robust health as looking after children is a fulltime calling and can be tiring at times, as you well know from having your own biological children. If you have health problems, then fostering a child is not a good idea. Your emotional wellbeing is as important as your physical health. However, if you become ill after fostering, your team will be able to assist and decide the best approach.

Cultural Skills

A foster child may come from a different culture to yours. Allowing them to develop a self-identity that accords with their background is necessary to their wellbeing. Determine if this is within your skill set as you make your decision.

General Temperament

Some other qualities you will need are a sense of humour and patience. Additionally, you must be able to persevere despite the difficulties that occur in life and any setbacks. You should be adaptable.

If this sounds like you, make the call, and reap the rewards of fostering.
