The Best Dog Breeds for Active Families

When we buy a dog, it’s often because we want to please the kids and add another member to the family.

Depending on your lifestyle, you may also want a dog that you’ll be able to take with you on activities.

Finding a dog who’s active and good with the kids can be difficult though, but it’s not impossible. Let’s take a look at some of the best dog breeds for active families.

Labradors

Let’s start with probably the number one choice for families in the UK – the Labrador. This breed is almost perfect for active families.

They have a great temperament and love going outside, though they don’t require it as much as other breeds who may become destructive if they don’t get enough action.

This means that you won’t have to worry about the dog hurting one of your children by playing too rough.

However, one thing you should know about Labradors is that they are prone to developing joint injuries and chronic issues later on in life. This is why we suggest you start looking at treatment for those issues right now so they can be healthy and prevent problems as they get older.

One option is to use a dog supplement like YuMOVE. This range of dog supplements was formulated specially to deal with common bone, joint, and mobility issues many dogs deal with.

It contains a variety of ingredients that have been proven to be useful, and they have formulas not only for old dogs but for adults and pups too.

Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers and Labradors share a lot in common. They’re both great pets for families and they love nature.

Golden Retrievers are a perfect exploration dog, and they will be up for virtually anything. One interesting trait about both dogs is that they love water, so if you are looking for a dog you can safely take on boat trips, this is the one. It’s a great dog if you have a pool as well.

These dogs are bursting with energy and have one of the kindest temperaments. All of these are reasons why it has become the quintessential family dog, and rightfully so.

Bernese Mountain Dog

These gentle giants are perfect for active families for a variety of reasons. They have a fun personality and are generally safe. They are also very well socialised and will get along with other dogs. They tend to be very kind and patient as well, so this is a great dog if you don’t want chaos inside the house.

They’re very much outside dogs too and love to go on long excursions. They can make for perfect companions when going camping or hiking, for instance.

However, we wouldn’t recommend this dog if you have very small children. Their size could be an issue and they could knock one over by accident, so that’s something you’ll need to think about.

Poodles

Poodles, on the other hand, are the perfect breed for small children. And don’t let the posh pooch stereotype fool you – these little dogs love action.

They have lots of energy and are the happiest when outdoors. These were bred as working dogs originally and they’re very bright. They are also very well-mannered when provided with enough activity.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are recognised as one of the best dogs for families despite their rough exterior, so much so that they’re often referred to as “nanny dogs”.

This is because they have a very protective nature and when they’re well socialised, they are great dogs to have around people, other dogs, and the family. They love life too and are very active, which is why you will need to give them the amount of exercise they need so they don’t grow antsy.

One sad fact about this breed, however, is that it often gets abandoned due to bad stereotypes. The Blue Cross alone is said to receive 400 of these per year.

While this can be disheartening, it’s also great news for those who want to adopt a purebred dog. So, we strongly suggest you give them a call and see if they have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier to rescue.

German Shorthaired Pointer

If you’re looking for a well-mannered and balanced dog that will be great with children and around people, the German Shorthaired Pointer is a great choice.

This is a dog that was bred to be in nature, so they’ll be in their element in the great outdoors. Know, however, that they can get a bit boisterous from time to time, so they’re better suited to families with older children who know how to behave around dogs better.

So, if you are looking for a fun, loving, and active dog to take with you on family trips, these are all great options. Make sure that you do your research on each and don’t be afraid to talk with an expert or fellow owner.
