What to Expect During a Visit to the Dentist

If you are one of the many people afraid to visit the dentist in the UK, you might have put off booking a dental appointment for as long as possible. However, fear for your oral health or a dental complaint might have left you with no other choice but to finally make an appointment.

To help put your mind at ease, here’s what you can expect during a visit to the dentist.

During Your Check-up

After you have taken a seat in the dental chair, a dentist will more than likely perform a full examination of your teeth, gums and mouth. It is also likely they will ask you about your general health, if you’ve experienced any recent issues with your oral health, and they might ask questions regarding your teeth cleaning habits. For the latter, the dentist may then offer advice on how to keep your teeth and gums healthy in the future.

If a dentist determines you will need any form of treatment, they will explain the procedure, its potential risks, and any associated dental costs.

A Teeth Cleaning

Most dental check-ups include a thorough cleaning of your teeth, which will be performed by either a dentist or a dental hygienist. They will use a specialised instrument to scrape below your gum line, which can eradicate built-up tartar and plaque. This can, otherwise, lead to tooth decay, gum disease, halitosis and other issues.

What’s more, registered dental practices will also turn to reputable UK dental suppliers for the finest infection control and PPE products, which will ensure your safety during a cleaning and any other dental procedure. By seeing a dentist that invests in the best products on the market, you can relax, knowing that you are getting the best care.

An X-Ray

A dentist might recommend an x-ray, depending on your symptoms, age, and risk of disease. By doing so, they could identify and diagnose problems you might never have noticed, such as abscesses, jawbone damage or impacted teeth.

While most modern dental practices use x-ray machines that emit little or no radiation, you must wear a lead apron as a precaution. You should also inform your dentist if you are pregnant prior to an x-ray.

Book an Appointment Every Six Months

While the average person should book an appointment at a dentist every six months, you might need to attend more often depending on the health of your mouth, gums, and teeth. It’s likely your dentist will advise you on when to book your next dental check-up, so you can stay on top of your oral health.

If, however, you experience any issues between check-ups, book an appointment as soon as possible. You also must inform your dentist if your health status has changed since your previous visit, as they might need to adjust a procedure or treatment to suit your new requirements.

Visiting a dental practice doesn’t need to be scary, and it is essential to do so to maintain excellent oral health. If you are suffering from dental anxiety, don’t be afraid to tell your dentist, who will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable from start to finish.
