The 18-year-old midfielder arrives at the Nigel Eady County Ground after progressing through the academies at both Celtic and Aston Villa, where he is regarded as a highly rated young prospect.
Borland, who was born in Glasgow, joined Aston Villa’s academy in August 2023 after leaving Celtic. His development accelerated quickly and he signed his first professional contract with the Premier League club in April 2024.
He went on to make his senior debut for Aston Villa in September 2024, coming on as a substitute during an EFL Cup win away at Wycombe Wanderers.
At youth level, Borland featured prominently in Aston Villa’s FA Youth Cup run, starting and completing the final as Villa beat Manchester City Under-18s 3-1 in the 2025 showpiece.
His performances during that season were recognised in May 2025 when he was named as one of the Premier League’s Scholars of the Year, before agreeing a further long-term contract extension at Villa.
Borland has also gained significant international experience, representing Scotland at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level despite his young age.
The move to Swindon Town offers Borland his first extended spell in senior first-team football. For Swindon, the loan provides an additional midfield option as the club looks to maintain momentum through the remainder of the campaign.
The club has welcomed Borland to SN1, with the expectation that the loan spell will benefit both player and team during the second half of the season.
