Kind-hearted nurses who can raise a smile on the faces of even the most poorly of children are being invited to use their talents to make a difference to families in Swindon.

Each year hundreds of youngsters are nursed back to full health by the superheroes working in the dedicated children’s team at the Great Western Hospital and an upcoming recruitment event is hoping to find a host of new recruits worthy of wearing the NHS cape.

Taking place between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 24 June at the Marlborough Road hospital, the day is a unique opportunity for any registered nurses interested in caring for younger patients to find out more about working in the vibrant Children’s Unit and also its sister ward, the Special Care Baby Unit.

Those coming along will be able to hear more about the roles available, tour the two departments and chat with existing members of staff about what it’s really like to care for some of the hospital’s most colourful characters.

Ashley Oakshott, Head of Recruitment, said: “Caring for sick children is one of the most amazing things a person can do with their life and we know there’s always a huge appetite among nurses to work in this rewarding environment.

“Many people’s earliest childhood memories are of their first trip to hospital and often the friendly faces who helped them will stay with them long into adulthood, which makes this career one in which a person can really make a lasting impression.

“The people working in the NHS are what make it such a globally-respected institution and I’m confident that events such as these will help to ensure that patients of all ages will continue to receive the best care from the best people for many years to come.”

Based on the second floor of the Great Western Hospital, the Children’s Unit is a state-of-the-art, 20-bed ward that has been modified into a bright, fun and dynamic environment where young people up to the age of 18 are able to receive safe care and treatment.

Further along the corridor is the Special Care Baby Unit – often referred to as ‘scaboo’ – and the place where the hospital’s smallest patients receive the round-the-clock care they need to overcome what can often be a difficult start to life.

Nurses without the relevant paediatric qualifications, but still interested in coming along, are encouraged to do so as successful candidates will be given full training and support to complete the required courses.

Interviews will be held on the day for people keen to start their new career as quickly as possible, however to be considered, please apply in advance using the national NHS Jobs website, www.jobs.nhs.uk.

For more information about working at the Great Western Hospital, visit the www.gwh.nhs.uk/jobs or speak to the Recruitment Team on 01793 604983.
