Revived last year by Tony and Sarah Asprey alongside Gemma and Russell Langdown, M4 Theatre Company was brought back with the aim of delivering high-quality musical theatre productions to local audiences. After seeing Gypsy, it is safe to say their comeback has been a resounding success.

Often regarded as one of the greatest musicals ever written, Gypsy first opened on Broadway in 1959, with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by the legendary Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. Loosely based on the memoirs of burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee, it tells the story of the fiercely ambitious stage mother Rose as she pushes her daughters towards stardom. The musical has become a theatre classic.

Set within the intimate surroundings of the Arts Centre, one of Swindon’s most cherished cultural venues, the production felt perfectly at home. Housed in a Victorian former school building in Old Town, the Arts Centre has long been a showcase for local talent alongside professional touring productions, making it an ideal venue for M4’s return.

Sarah Asbury, taking on the demanding role of Rose, delivered a commanding performance. She expertly guided the audience through every twist and turn of the story, portraying the character’s determination, vulnerability and relentless ambition with conviction. It is a role that has challenged some of the biggest names in musical theatre over the decades, and Sarah embraced it with confidence and energy.

The production itself had something for everyone. There were children, balloons, children dressed as balloons, a dog, a cow, plenty of laughs and a host of entertaining musical numbers. The choreography was superb throughout, with performers of all ages showcasing impressive skill and enthusiasm. The singing was equally strong, helping to bring the story vividly to life.

The younger members of the cast were clearly enjoying every moment on stage and performed with confidence and charm. Meanwhile, the adult cast delivered excellent performances across the board, making it easy for the audience to become fully invested in the characters and their journeys.

What stood out most was the sense of community that ran through the entire performance. This was not simply a revival of a classic musical, it was the return of a local theatre company determined to make its mark once again. The audience responded warmly throughout, rewarding the cast and crew with enthusiastic applause.

This was a delightful evening of musical theatre and a highly successful comeback for M4 Theatre Company. If Gypsy is any indication of what is to come, local theatre lovers have plenty to look forward to in the years ahead.

Many thanks to M4 Theatre Company for their return to the stage. We look forward to seeing what they do next.

You can still book tickets to the remaining shows.
