The national campaign celebrates the importance of parks in supporting health, wellbeing, biodiversity and local communities.

Throughout the week, the council will be highlighting a range of parks across the borough and inviting people to rediscover the green spaces on their doorstep.

Swindon is home to more than 150 parks, play areas and open spaces, including Lydiard Park, Stanton Country Park, Queen’s Park and Coate Water.

The borough’s parks offer a range of attractions for walkers, families and wildlife enthusiasts, with many also providing children’s play areas, sports facilities and walking and cycling routes.

Residents are also being invited to share their favourite parks and explain what makes them special, with the council planning to feature some of those stories during the week.

Councillor Jake Chandler, Swindon Borough Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

“While we appreciate our parks 365 days a year, Love Parks Week gives us the chance to showcase just how special they are in this week of national celebration.

“We have such a wide variety of parks and green spaces across Swindon that wherever you live, you’re never further than a five-minute walk away from nature.

“Our park rangers do an amazing job at keeping our country parks clean and tidy, and parish councils, local community groups and volunteer organisations are fantastic at keeping our other green spaces clean and I’d like to thank all of them.

“A number of our parks and green spaces also have play areas, such as those at Lydiard and Coate Water, and I’d like to give a big thank you to advocacy groups, such as Mum’s on a Mission and Benjamin’s Smile, who continue to work with us to help understand how we can make these spaces more accessible to everyone.”

Love Parks Week is held annually to celebrate the role parks and green spaces play in everyday life.

The council hopes the campaign will encourage more people to explore the borough’s outdoor spaces, whether that is spotting wildlife at Coate Water, walking through the historic grounds of Lydiard Park, visiting Stanton’s ancient woodland or enjoying the gardens at Queen’s Park.
