The volunteer-led club is run by Royal Voluntary Service and takes place every Thursday from 11.30am-1.30pm at Maple Court retirement living.

Open to anyone in the community, it provides a freshly prepared two-course meal and the chance to socialise with others.

Organised by a dedicated team of volunteers, the lunch club has become a regular fixture for many local people, particularly older residents or those seeking more social contact.

The charity said loneliness continues to affect a significant number of older people, especially those living alone or with limited opportunities to connect with others.

According to its latest research, 88% of people who attend Royal Voluntary Service activities say they feel more connected to their community as a result.

Liliana Illes, Community Support Coordinator at Royal Voluntary Service, said:

“This lunch club is a warm and friendly place for people across Swindon to come together over a home-cooked meal, particularly those who may be older or experiencing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Thanks to support from players of Postcode Lottery, we’re able to continue offering a place at the table for those who may not otherwise have company at lunchtime. Our doors are open to anyone who might enjoy a regular sit down with others, and we’d love to see you there – just get in touch to book your place.”

The initiative is supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, whose funding helps sustain services like the Swindon lunch club.

Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, added:

“Small moments like a shared meal or a friendly conversation can make a real impact on someone’s wellbeing. Thanks to Postcode Lottery players, Royal Voluntary Service can run lunch clubs like the one in Swindon, helping more people access welcoming spaces where they can socialise and be part of their community.”

Places at the Maple Court Lunch Club are limited and must be booked in advance. Attendees do not need to be residents of Maple Court to take part.

Anyone interested can contact Liliana Illes on 07815 020426 to reserve a place.
