Easter is over, the chocolate eggs are finally finished and the media hype is all about getting in shape for summer.  April can be one of the busiest time of the year for gyms, slimming clubs and exercise classes with the common message of ‘8 weeks to your amazing Bikini Body’, but for local postnatal fitness company OneFitMama, they feel the message for new mothers should be different.

“New mums have just spent 9 months growing a person, and then 27 hours trying to push that person out.  This really takes its toll on a woman’s body, and it needs time to heal and recover” says Amy Harmsworth, regional OneFitMama instructor for Swindon.  “We don’t care what shape our mums are, we just want them to feel fitter, healthier and more confident with the body they already have.  The summer brings so much pressure for women to get back in shape, and for new mums to get their pre-baby body back, and so many ladies will hit the gym, find an exercise class and work tirelessly to fit back into their summer shorts and skinny jeans.  What they don’t realise is that many of the exercises they are doing can cause more harm than good.  ”

“After birth, the body needs time to repair, so performing countless sit ups and crunches to get rid of the mummy tummy can actually make common postnatal ailments such as tummy separations worse.  High impact exercise and heavy weight lifting can put significant strain on a weak pelvic floor, and cause embarrassing accidents from something as little as a cough”

“This is not to say other exercise classes are not effective, but at OneFitMama, we pride ourselves at putting mums first, and combine safe and effective exercise sympathetic to those post birth conditions.  Not only this, but we combine our moderate exercise programmes with special baby and toddler zones within the room so that mums can be getting a great workout whilst their little ones have fun and make new friends too – there’s no need for childcare.”

“With three different programmes for mums to choose from, including our 6 week OneFitCore class designed to repair and restore the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, the OneFitMama Baby & Toddler circuit classes and our 6 week OneToughMama Bootcamp to help mums stay in great shape long after maternity leave ends, we have something for mums at every stage of motherhood.”

OneFitMama classes run in Highworth, Bridgemead, Redhouse and Coleview.  For more information go to www.onefitmama.co.uk/swindon, www.facebook.com/onefitmamaswindon or email [email protected]
