In celebration of New Zealand Beer Month, Arkell’s have launched its original Pioneer New Zealand IPA in cans

Arkell’s Pioneer New Zealand IPA is a pale IPA with floral, lemon notes and tropical fruit flavour, only ever usually available from Arkell’s pubs on draught.

The new packaging format marks the celebration of New Zealand Beer month by the Wiltshire-based brewer.

It is the first time Arkell’s has canned its specialist IPA, which is the fastest-growing type of packaging of UK craft beer.

Alex Arkell, Head Brewer said: “It’s fantastic to see how Pioneer has become a firm favourite amongst our customers, so it was a logical next step for us to launch a canned version. Launched last year during our 175-year anniversary celebrations, it was inspired by a trip halfway around the world which revealed an unexpectedly rich family brewing heritage in New Zealand. I returned home from New Zealand armed with hand-selected hops to brew a special beer celebrating Arkell’s heritage and New Zealand.

Arkell’s Pioneer New Zealand IPA is a pale IPA with floral, lemon notes and tropical fruit flavour, only ever usually available from Arkell’s pubs on draught. The brew was first made in May 2018, after Alex Arkell returned from a trip to New Zealand.

The IPA is brewed using two different types of New Zealand Hops, the Taikeke Hop and the Moteuka Hop, both ideal for pale ales and their tropical fruit aromas, both hand-selected and shipped to the UK from New Zealand by Head Brewer, Alex Arkell in 2018.

Available in 330ml cans, only the purest ingredients go into Arkell’s beer. Arkell’s Pioneer New Zealand IPA is available from The Grape and Grain, the Arkell’s onsite shop located in Wiltshire and also available to purchase online.

Arkell’s began brewing beer in Swindon in 1843. By 1863, its founder John Arkell’s son, also called John, emigrated to New Zealand where he launched Arkell’s White Star Brewery in Caversham, South of the Island.

White Star Brewery was the first of four Arkell’s New Zealand breweries in the 1860s.

By the following year, he’d sold White Star Brewery and opened the Phoenix Brewery in Hokitika, on the West Coast.

Sadly to date, none of the Arkell’s breweries opened in New Zealand are currently in operation.
