A charity ball in Marlborough has raised over £13,000 for the organisation Sarcoma UK.

Sarcoma Ball

The sold-out event, mc’d by TV presenter Alastair Green, took place on the evening of Friday 15 February at Marlborough’s Town Hall and treated guests to a canape reception and three-course meal supported by Rick Stein and Ramsbury Brewery.

Local businesses including The Food Gallery, Marlborough Golf Club, Kim Vine, The Wyvern Theatre and many more donated an abundance of prizes to be used in the ball’s auction helping those who coordinated the event raise a vast amount of money. Amongst the organisers was local resident Emily Travis, a mother of two young children, who is living with terminal sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Since her diagnosis, Emily and her family have benefitted from the support of Sarcoma UK which is a small focussed charity who work hard to educate and raise awareness of this little-known and devastating disease.

The money raised through this event will go towards the charity continuing to help those affected by sarcoma, as well as funding ground-breaking research in which they pledged to invest £3 million by 2020.

Redrow Homes was another sponsor, whose donation covered payment of print costs, table dressing materials and ensuring security was in attendance, meaning that the ball could raise as much money as possible. Other donors included Dan’s and The Harrow restaurants, Costa Coffee, The Parlour, Cath Kidston, Chips Away, Fix the Bike, Morrisons, Tesco, Waitrose, Mint Velvet, Rejuvenesce, Amanda Marsh Physiotherapy, Becky Tolputt Massage, The Wyvern Theatre, Sumblers Butchers, Butler Toll, Marlborough Summer School and Crosby and Lawrence.

Emily Travis, the organiser of the event, said: “This event proved to be very popular within the Marlborough community and we were very pleased to have sold all 150 tickets within 24 hours of their release. We have been totally overwhelmed by the support of local businesses, from Barnes coaches who provided transport from the villages, to Sue Brady who catered for dinner.

“Sarcoma UK has been indispensable to myself and my family as we learn to cope with my diagnosis and myself and my friends that have organised this ball wanted to repay them for their support.

“We are also very grateful to Redrow for donating such a large amount of money towards the cause as it ensured all of the money raised goes directly to the charity without having to make deductions for expenditure.”

Sabrina Dawson, area sales manager for Redrow South West, said: “Emily is such an inspiration and has been an asset to Sarcoma UK, helping them raise much needed funds to help those who need it.

“The charity ball sounded like such a fantastic event and we were delighted to support it.”

Redrow Homes is currently building and selling the first phase of their Marleberg Grange development in Marlborough which is made up of a range of three, four and five-bedroom homes starting from £360,995.

The development, which will be made up of 171 properties once complete, offers potential buyers houses that cost fifteen per cent less than equivalent homes just 45 minutes’ drive closer to London, providing great value for money for commuters.
