Updated: 18th August 2018 – The proposed closure of the Coate Water Roundabout for resurfacing is no longer taking place, removing the 9 days of overnight closures that were set to start on Monday 20 August.

The project was pulled due to last minute increased costs from the contractor, which the council didn’t believe would be ‘good value’ and warranted.

Swindon Borough Council said: “We will be looking at options for completing this scheme at a later date and will provide an update when these are confirmed”.

Below you can find details of the proposed plan to close the roundabout and where the diversions were set to be, before the sudden announcement by the council that the project was no longer to going to happen.

Coate Water Roundabout To Close For 9 Nights for Resurfacing

Vital resurfacing and relining will close the The Coate Water Roundabout whilst work is undertaken.

Work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am from Monday, 20 August to Friday, 31 August, excluding the August bank holiday weekend.

There will be no access to Coate Water Country Park as a full closure of the roundabout from all approaches will be in place.

The £300,000 improvement project will involve the resurfacing and relining of the roundabout.

Cllr Fionuala Foley, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and the Environment, said: “We have done all we can to ensure that these important improvement works do not cause too much inconvenience for drivers.

“The works are necessary in order to replace the current road lining, which is very badly worn.

“The Coate Roundabout is a very busy junction and we realise that road closures may cause problems, which is why we are carrying out the work at night to minimise disruption.

“We thank people for their patience while the diversions are in place and we look forward to seeing the road surface greatly improved once the works are complete.”

Signposted diversion routes will be in place and emergency vehicles will still be able to access the Great Western Hospital at all times, though other vehicles will have to follow the diversion routes to access GWH.

Arrangements will also be made to maintain access to businesses adjacent to the roundabout.
