UTC Swindon Sixth Form students are celebrating after achieving the highest Progress 8 score of any post-16 provision in Swindon. UTC Swindon was the only school in the area to achieve a positive score for this important age group.

The result underlines the growing strength of teaching and learning and the excellent way UTC Swindon students are prepared for life beyond school. Students from the most recent cohort have gone on to gain places on competitive university courses in Mechanical and Civil Engineering and to secure sought-after apprenticeships with employers such as BMW, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Network Rail, Royal Navy and Bosch.

UTC Swindon’s Principal, Jon Oliver, commented: “This positive post-16 score is testament to the hard work and commitment of our students and staff. They have dedicated themselves to improving standards and staff have ensured that students gain enormously from the time spent with us. The results are well-deserved and have given students a strong foundation to successfully apply for employment, apprenticeships and university courses.”

Joanne Harper, Executive Principal at UTC Swindon, congratulated the students and staff on the post-16 results, adding: “The progress made at Post-16 shows that our students are receiving high quality teaching; the same teachers also teach our KS4 students where progress from their starting points at the UTC is also positive. The quality of teaching and learning is the most important aspect of any school improvement plan and these results show the UTC is on the right path and is already making rapid improvement.”

UTC Swindon recently announced that it has launched a new Digital specialism to run alongside its Engineering specialism, offering students opportunities to build their skills in the digital technologies that are highly sought after by local employers and nationally.

UTCs nationwide have an outstanding record in post-19 destinations, with 97% of all students who left UTCs in 2017 entering employment, further education or training. Only 1% of UTC students did not enter employment or further education, compared with a national figure of 12%.[1]
