A Swindon off licence and newsagent has had its licence suspended for two months as part of a crack-down on anti-social drinking in the town centre.

Havelock News on Havelock Street was found to be in breach of a number of licensing laws including the selling of alcohol to those under-age.  The owner of the premises also has to agree to a number of conditions, including:  not selling single cans of alcohol and improving the training of staff.

Police Community Co-ordinator PC Paul Bezzant said:  “Clamping down on this off-licence is just part of an on-going effort to tackle anti-social behaviour in the town related to street drinking.

“The Police Licencing Team continue to make sure retail outlets like this undertake their obligations and don’t contribute to crime and disorder in the local community.
“Wiltshire Police is also currently working in conjunction with Swindon Borough Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team and inSwindon to target street drinkers in the Bridge Street, Fleet Street and John Street areas.

“Using evidence from CCTV coupled with our patrols and on-going work with the local business community we’ve been able to issue eight Community Protection Warnings to those persistent offenders.

“By working together with our Swindon partners, we can not only help reduce anti-social behaviour in our town, often caused by drink and drugs, but also hopefully get to the root cause by offering support to those who need help with substance abuse.”
