Be ready, be cyber aware

Zephyr, the South West’s Regional Cyber Crime Unit have re-issued warnings to businesses following last week’s ransomware attack.

The aim is to encourage businesses and private computer users to ensure they have adequate protection.

Zephyr are keen for businesses and organisations throughout the south west, particularly the smaller businesses to ensure they take computer security seriously and take appropriate steps to safeguard themselves.

Working with the National Cyber Security Centre and following last week’s attack on the NHS a special briefing has been produced which aims to support businesses and organisations throughout the region.

It contains essential advice and steps for businesses and individuals to implement at home and in the workplace to protect themselves against the threat and to help prevent the malware from infecting further businesses.

DI Ed Heath of Zephyr RCCU said: “Although the attack happened last week, we don’t want people to be complacent and forget about it because they were not victims. The threat remains and people need to take action.

“There is a constant threat and people who use computers at work or for personal use need to ensure they take precautions to prevent themselves from becoming a victim of this rapidly increasing threat.

“The new regional briefing includes details of cybercrime events taking place in the South West; advice; details on current threats; a video blog on “mitigating malware”; news and an explanation of cyber terms such as ‘ransomware’ (malicious software that makes data or systems unusable until the victim makes a payment).

“We would encourage more businesses to sign up to receive this Regional Cyber Briefing Sheet which is sent out every two weeks,” said DI Heath.
